This 2,000,000-square-foot pedestrian garden city features a diverse mix of residential types, including high-rise and mid-rise apartments, townhouses, and single-family villas, on a 25-acre site on Huxindao Island in Xiamen, China. The residences are organized around a lush green central park, intimate courtyards, and stone-paved plazas; landscaped pedestrian streets lead to a waterfront public park that wraps the peninsula. A highly-visible clubhouse serves as a gateway and social center. The project’s architectural vocabulary, inspired by both traditional Chinese and Mediterranean architecture, responds to local climate and takes advantage of local materials and construction techniques.
