BEST URBAN REGENERATION PROJECT

Revitalisation Project at Mallory Street / Burrows Street, Wan Chai

Hong Kong
Architect: Aedas
Developer: Urban Renewal Authority, Hong Kong

This project conserves and adaptive re-uses a rare and intact 1910s historic shophouse ensemble, and thereby revitalizes the old district of Wan Chai. This project aims to promote best practice conservation and innovative architectural design.

It delivers three almost impossible concurrent tasks: (a) Provision of a 300 sm Public Open Space within a tight urban site, (2) Preservation of historic buildings on site, and (3) Revitalizing it into an Art and Cultural Centre fit for modern public use.

Urban streetscape and community environment is revitalized; historic components are salvaged and re-used practically; traditional building skills are revived and advanced.
