A flight of enthusiasm for Uruguay’s newest airport

The new terminal at Carrasco International Airport, which serves Uruguay’s capital city, Montevideo, was created to increase capacity and spur commercial growth and tourism in the surrounding region. This new infrastructure has transformed the Carrasco Airport into one of the most modern airports in the world, making it an architectural flagship for the country. In 2012, 15 % more passengers traveled through the airport. This traffic even surpassed regional results.

Uruguay will be presenting its real estate expanding vision at MIPIM in booth 22.05.

The firm Rafael Viñoly Architects designed the new Carrasco International Airport in Montevideo. The design of the building prioritizes public zones and amenities, providing these areas with an abundance of open space and natural light. Arriving travelers, for example, pass through a fully glazed mezzanine level that leads them to the terminal space before they can descend to immigration, baggage claim, and customs. A public landscaped terrace and a restaurant occupy the second floor, providing sweeping views of the runway and the main concourse.
